Concept Based Video: Lower Than Atlantis - Words Don't Come So Easily

Concept based videos do not tend to follow a narrative but instead are based upon a single theme or idea and focus more on art-based imagery. Whilst concept based music videos often appear random to viewers, a lot of times they can actually be linked to the song, but in a unique and unconventional way. For the Words Don't Come So Easily music video, it features people being covered in a sticky colourful liquid and this liquid being in foods/being spat out. This represents the words or sentences that you are too afraid to say, and the fact that people are eating it represents how people 'eat their words'. Whilst this video is unique and very abstract, it could still attract fans of the band as the ban features in the video.
Performance Based Video: Twenty One Pilots - Can't Help Falling in Love (Cover)

Performance based videos showcase the band or artist performing either to the camera or at a live show. This style of music video is commonly used for high energy songs and is also used widely within the rock genre. This is because the performance will be energetic and will captivate the viewer, whereas a slow song or an artist that is not interesting to watch would make the video boring. An advantage of this style of music video is that it is cheap to make - if at a live performance, it simply involves filming the song whilst it is being played. This video uses both clips of the artist performing to the camera and to the crowd. This then shows the viewer how the artist performs on his own and also how the crowd is engaged at the show, and therefore may influence people to go to their shows.
Narrative Based Video (Amplification): Neck Deep - Growing Pains

Narrative videos focus on portraying a story throughout the video. This will include characters and a plot line, and will not make any recognition of the music being played (for example, there will be no lip syncing). The story being told can relate to the song, but this is not always the case. Whilst narrative videos are very engaging and grab the attention of viewers, they can be expensive to make as they require hiring actors, sets and props. Narratives can sometimes follow Todorov's theory of an equilibrium, a disruption to the equilibrium and then a resolution which brings back the equilibrium. For example, in this music video, it starts with the group of boys seen in the image above hanging out. They plan to go to a local disco to meet a group of girl, but when they get there it is empty. The girls then show up and they decide to stay and end up having a good time. This can relate to the song as it addressed the themes of adolescence and growing up.
There are three types of narrative video:
Illustration: where the story in the video relates to the lyrics of the song.
Amplification: where the story within the video is influenced by the lyrics but is not entirely related to the song. It may different themes to compliment the emotion and feelings of the song.
Disjuncture: where the narrative holds very different relationship to the song.
What Video Style I Will Use
I will be creating a narrative style music video as I feel this will give me the most freedom and allow me to use more creativity whilst still sticking with the themes of the song. I will try and link a theory to the music video as I feel this will give the video a more film style vibe. For example, I will try and link Todorov's theory as this will help create a strong story.
